Слово "пудра" французского происхождения, хотя в русский язык пришло из немецкого.

Привычка пудриться восходит к периоду истории Древнего Египта. Тогда весьма четко шло разделение людей по цвету кожи: на светлокожих и смуглых. На протяжении многих веков молочно-белый цвет кожи почитался как один из первейших атрибутов женственности. Белизна лица подчеркивала социальную принадлежность благородной дамы в отличие от крестьянок и вообще женщин из простонародья с обожженными солнцем лицами.
Издавна существовала пудра двух видов - растительная и минеральная. Первая, более ранняя, готовилась из риса и пшеницы (муки тонкого помола).

Древним египтянам и шумерам пудрой служила красная и желтая охра. И сейчас ею пользуются многие племена Африки, Южной Америки и Океании. Гречанки пудрили лица свинцовыми белилами, этот обычай у них переняли римлянки, которые пудрились также белой глиной.

Римский поэт Овидий сообщал, что у его соотечественников была в большом ходу диасразмата - нечто вроде современной компактной пудры, из смеси бобовой и пшеничной муки.

Белиться и пудриться женщинам было необходимо по нескольким причинам: чтобы скрыть возраст; чтобы не быть мертвенно-бледным при освещении свечами; чтобы скрыть следы оспы и венерических болезней, обезобразившие лица многих людей тех эпох.

В России пудра была известна еще с XVII века. Дамы и кавалеры пользовались рисовой и пшеничной пудрой, которую ароматизировали, подкрашивали.

В 18 веке пудрились и женщины, и мужчины. Пудрили не только лицо,но и волосы, парики.

Пудру дря причесок также употребляли всевозможных цветов: серебряную, белую, палевую и розовую. Дама надевала льняной пеньюар «пудер-мантель», чтобы не испортить платье и грим, и держала длинную маску с пластинками слюды против глаз, парикмахер обильно пудрил ее. Парикмахеров той поры нередко называли «мерлан», что означало рыба, обваленная в муке.
Существовали специальные шкафы-комнатки, где сверху сыпалась пудра.

Во второй половине XVIII века М. Пыляев очень живо описал туалет щеголихи: "Горничная рвет бумажки, а девчонка бегает, раскаляет щипцы... Употребляли пудру разных цветов - розовую, палевую, серенькую, а-ля ваниль, а-ля флер де оранж, миль флере... Некоторые имели особые шкафы, внутри пустые, в которых пудрились, барыня влезала в шкаф, затворяла дверцы и благовонная пыль нежно опускалась на голову..."

Расход пудры был колоссальным. В Пруссии, например, в конце XVIII века 9 миллионов ее жителей расходовали 91 миллион фунтов пудры в год.
